A box shear, also commonly referred to as a horizontal shear, Container Compact Shear is a highly efficient and safe heavy-duty processing machine used in the scrap metal recycling industry. Designed specifically to handle light, thin, loose, or bulky metal scrap, it effectively cuts the material into qualified feedstock suitable for remelting in a furnace.
Box-type shearing machines are primarily used in scrap metal recycling facilities, metal processing plants, and steel mills.
Materials processed: End-of-life vehicles, motorcycles, appliance casings, color-coated steel sheets, rebar, channel steel, angle steel, and other types of scrap metal.
Ultimate goal: To shear scrap metal of various shapes into uniform-sized furnace feedstock.

1. High Safety:
The fully or semi-enclosed hopper design effectively prevents sparks and flying debris generated during shearing, significantly reducing the risk of workplace injuries.

1.Feeding and Filling
Operators use a grab or an electromagnetic chuck to load scrap materials—such as end-of-life vehicle bodies, color-coated steel sheets, and rebar—into the hopper at the front of the machine.
2.Pre-compression and Compaction
This is the key feature that distinguishes this machine from traditional open-type gantry shear . The pre-compression mechanism inside the hopper (such as side compression cylinders or an upper compression plate) forcefully compresses the loose material into a dense block, preparing it for efficient shearing.
3.Feeding and Shearing
The compacted material is pushed horizontally toward the shearing blades by the main pusher. When the material reaches the designated position, massive hydraulic shearing blades activate, cutting it into small pieces of the preset length.
4.Discharge and Cycle
The cut, qualified furnace feed falls directly through the discharge chute, and the equipment immediately resets to begin the next shearing cycle. The entire process is highly automated and significantly efficient.
Liner plates are installed on the inner walls of the material chamber, the surface of the pusher, and around the blade holder of the box-type shear. Their primary function is not to perform the shearing action, but to provide wear and impact resistance.
Common Materials
High-Hardness Wear-Resistant Steel: Hualan Machinery uses imported or domestically produced high-strength wear-resistant plates, typically with a hardness of 900 HB (Brinell Hardness).
Characteristics: This material has extremely high hardness, with wear resistance several times that of ordinary high-manganese steel.
Service Life and Maintenance
Service Life: When processing ordinary scrap steel, the annual wear rate of high-quality liners can be controlled at around 0.3 mm/year.
Replacement Indicators: Replacement is required when liners are severely worn, preventing adjustment of the blade clearance, or when deep pits or cracks appear on the liner surface. It is generally recommended to inspect and replace them every 1–2 years (depending on workload).
